Barely two years after scores of people were consumed by a conflagration from a pipeline explosion, tragedy was averted Monday night at Ijedodo in the Ojo area of Lagos, when another pipeline explosion rocked the area.
Eyewitness accounts said no casualty was recorded in the explosion which occurred at a creek in the neighbourhood. VM leant that the incident which occurred around 11pm, escalated because emergency operators could not access the area due to its swampy nature.
Although no life was lost in the incident, VM could not ascertain the level of damage as at 6pm yesterday. Eyewitnesses said the combined team of fire fighters from the Federal and state Fire Services could not access the area. The National Emergency Management Authority, NEMA, said Monday's explosion occurred at a creek near the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation NNPC pipeline.
NEMA's South West Information Officer, Ibrahim Farinloye, said the NNPC supply which came directly from Mosinmi Ogun State was shut down to stop further supply to the fire.
"NNPC has shut down flows and locked the supply valves to stop further supply feeding the fire. Ije Ododo line is directly from Atlas Cove which supplies products to Moshinmi to further distribute to other parts of South West zone. Ije Ododo and Arepo have been very volatile and extremely dangerous due to activities of the vandals in recent times," he said.
