Owerri — Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has appealed to striking workers of the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri (FMC) to call off their strike and go back to work.
Workers at the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri (FMC) have been on strike fo
r the past two months.
Okorocha made the appeal when he met with workers at the centre yesterday. Our correspondent reports that the strike has caused Imo people and other Nigerians untold hardship.
He said since the establishment is owned by the federal government, he could only ask the workers to go back to work, while he travels to Abuja, to meet with relevant parties over their demands.
The governor condemned the closure of the hospital for almost two months, adding that it is a disservice to people of the state and other Nigerians who make use of the centre. Responding to Governor Okorocha appeal, one of the FMC workers identified as Mr, Ibe Uchenna, insisted that the Director of FMC, Dr Mrs. Angela Uwakwe, must be removed on the basis of allegations of corruption and high handedness.
He also complained about the inability of the FMC Director to pay them their entitlements such as promotion arrears, uniform arrears, among others.
